Effect of intra-articular injection of mesenchymal stem cells in cartilage repair in experimental animals
2014, Egyptian RheumatologistCitation Excerpt :Non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments are used for early and moderately early cases of OA, but protection of articular cartilage has so far not been convincingly shown [5,19]. Surgical intervention is often indicated when the symptoms cannot be controlled and the disease progresses [20]. Whether arthroscopic lavage and/or debridement can provide symptomatic relief is unclear [21].
Osteoarthritis patients' perceptions of " appropriateness" for total joint replacement surgery
2012, Osteoarthritis and CartilageCitation Excerpt :Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common, disabling, and costly disease1,2. When medical management of hip or knee OA fails, total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is recommended3–7. Most TJA procedures are performed for OA8.
Minimally clinically important improvement: All non-responders are not really non-responders an illustration from total knee replacement
2012, Osteoarthritis and CartilageCitation Excerpt :To illustrate the impact of classifying as non-responders those who cannot achieve a MCID due to their pre-intervention PRO score, we chose a cohort of people who had primary TKR for OA. TKR has been shown to be an effective surgical procedure, with a low complication rate, for relieving pain and improving function in people with moderate to severe knee OA when medical management has failed10. The Western Ontario McMaster Universities' Osteoarthritis Outcome Measure (WOMAC) is a commonly used PRO measure in this patient group.
